reporter Maybe just make the GDAL Metadata widget read-only and remove the edit buttons for v3.9?

AFAIK it is working, but the xml data is written twice: 1. as in the table, but afterwards QGIS overwrites the aux.xml data with it’s own in-memory state. The re-load therefore updates the previous state.

reporter Not quit sure why you concider it “is working”, when QGIS is overwriting my changes again. From a user perspective, it isn’t working.
Let’s just make it a metadata reader, instead of an editor. Hide the buttons for v3.9. If you can fix this in the future, just show the buttons again.

Checked for ENVI, where it seems to work. Can you provide a list of file formats where it is not working? Seems to be an issue with the GDAL drivers
-
reporter I testet with GTiff.
Most important formats are: GTiff, VRT and ENVI. Would be good, if those are working correctly.
Most important format is GTiff.

If I remember correctly, we decided to not edit raster sources inside the Layer Properties dialog.
So, shouldn't the GDAL Metadata widget be a read-only widget?

This also relates to the Band Properties:
Are changes applied to source?
