"Instance Number" in Tag Browser is quite confusing

Issue #24 resolved
Charlie Moore created an issue

It would appear that the "Instance Number" in the Tag Browser doesn't actually match the Instance Number in the DICOM headers. That is highly confusing. Two different possible solutions:

  1. Display the Instance Number from the DICOM headers. Because this element is not strictly required, use the SOP Instance UID as a fallback if missing/empty.
  2. (Weaker solution) call it something other than Instance Number.

Yes, agreed. The tool is incomplete and could be confusing. See my answer to Issue #25.

You’ve listed both of the issues with the Tag Browser as “critical”. In its current state, is the Tag Browser useful enough to keep in the release as an experimental feature, i.e., use with caveats?

The "Instance Number" is confusing, I agree. Its value represented the image index within the scan image set, but now it has been fixed to show the actual Instance Number or the SOP Instance UID as a fallback.
