Background

As part of co-ordinating care for patients with complex care needs, there is a need to be able to retrieve clinical documents from remote systems on-demand, to allow for the retrieval of care plans, care preferences, or any other documents required to support co-ordinated care across distributed teams. This will typically be as a result of having received a notification (see notification message specification, related document 7), but may also be used to support other implementation patterns in future ITK releases. The ITK document retrieval message was designed as a generic capability to support this requirement, but should support any form of document retrieval for any form of document that local systems wish to exchange.
