Animated backgrounds and animated box art

Issue #307 new
Former user created an issue

I love the ease of use and visuals of launch box, but there is one thing i think many would like to be added, that is using an animated .gif as a front cover. i have one i have made that the case opens the disc comes out then the case rotates and it close again. Please if its not to much work could you add this? Thanks.

Is it possible for Anonymous to edit the title to reflect the feature requested at the description? Like GIF support or something

@ walk left it depends on the quality of the video, and i was going to use the gifs as cover art, i have a .mov and a .gif that are the exact same resolution and runtime, the .mov is 648 mb and the gif is only 84 mb, so what you say isnt always the case.

yes, .mov are lossless and can support more colors than .gif which only supports 256 colors, gif is also lossless but it holds less color data than the mov, resulting in less space required.

This would be a great feature indeed is to have animated box images or animated actual arcade cabinet images instead of flyers for mame.

As a half step (maybe?) video can now be used as a background. Moving images can also be achieved via our Theme engine called XAML. This doesn't exactly cover LaunchBox though. Unsure if I should close the ticket, but these features kind of exist.

Bumping does not do anything for getting this added. What matters is how many votes a feature request gets. Typically those with high votes get added to a user poll and it is then voted on. Even though this has 21 votes it did not even make the poll last year.

So the best thing to do is vote instead of bumping.

I would love for LB to support gif and apng for as many image types as possible. SteamGridDB has a fantastic collection of animated box arts, clear logos, and ‘heroes’ (the big banner that appears at the top of a game’s library page, kinda like an arcade marquee), not to mention that Sega’s Genesis/Megadrive collection on Steam comes with a handful of official optional animated library graphics in the game’s files.

Support for 3D model boxes in general would be great. This is in the current poll so hopefully it will make it in. I would suggest that this feature be implemented in Launchbox instead of just BigBox, as many users on PCs don’t tend to use BB but are still paying members.
