Feature Request: Show other platforms on Game Details page

Issue #3097 resolved
alnyden created an issue

One feature from GameEx that would be awesome to see in Big Box is having a list of other platforms you can play the same game on from the games detail page. For example, it could show every version of Asteroids from different systems that could be quickly launched from that link. It's really fun to jump around and try the same game on different systems so easily.

    I voted for this also. My favorite feature of GameEx. You go to Atari 5200, select "Asteriods", then in a window there is a list of every other platform you have asteroids installed on. As you highlight each version, a video of what that version looks like plays in that window.

    I was GameEx user for years and now I'm using LaunchBox/Bigbox because it's better for me, but this is the only feature I miss from GameEx and want to see. All other things in LaunchBox are incredible, but this feature to see the same game on other platforms is very important for me and I think other people that like to see their collections.

    Please, consider to add this to future releases. It's a very good feature when you try it.

    Thanks.

    I’d love for this feature to be on the next poll, however, I remember Jason commenting this wasn’t something he thought was possible for Launchbox given the data in the database. Maybe that could be re-visited as it would still be a great feature to add.

    Good Idea. That´s why i´m adding some alternate names related to specific releases, to be easier to match diferent versions or ports with diferent release names.

    Just to clarify, this is not possible to do completely accurately, because we lack the data. But because of the seemingly-high demand for it, we’re thinking about implementing it via rough matching (identifying related titles by name, release year, and developer/publisher).

    @Jason Carr

    Hey Jason, my solution for your mentioned problem would be to be able to couple games yourself. That should not be a big problem I think.

    It would be very nice if you could add this feature. I am waiting for this a very long time 😇

    The amount of work required to do that though…I don’t think very many people would be interested in manually doing it for thousands of games. It would have to be done on the games database, and it would take years to populate to any decent state. I’m not leaning in that direction.

    i wonder how gameex does it then? A layman like myself would speculate that since it's just a database, can't it go search every platform in the xml and see if the name exists elsewhere? It might not be EXACT exact, but if there's a stray entry here or there, just let us delete that entry like we have to delete images that were downloaded during the Metadata import. I just had a few commodore 64 covers show up in my wiiware import. Just had to click remove image, and go manually scrape from emumovies and check what was downloaded to get the correct cover.

    Hey Jason. I think it’s great you’re considering implementing this via rough matching! Personally, I wouldn’t mind at all if it’s not completely accurate. Also, I agree most including myself would not prefer to manually connect the games. It would take too long and defeat the purpose of the interface making suggestions. Maybe a compromise is letting the user manually disconnect a match, so one could clean up any false matches. But if that’s too complicated, I still think it would be a great feature even if not perfect. Thanks for your efforts with LaunchBox and listening to the community, always appreciated!

    GameEx is not 100% accurate, but it makes its work perfect for me. Yes, there are some false matches, but there are a lot more correct matches. I don’t know how it does, but this feature is beautifull. Please Jason, consider to implement it in some way. Thanks a lot for your great work and this fantastic frontend.

    I know Jason said it would take years to build up correct info on the games DB. It’s worth mentioning that each and every day hundreds of changes and updates are made to the DB. The community is very active and I really believe with time it could be done; the DB itself and its evolution is proof of that in my opinion.

    I assume that is not such a big issue in Developing like setting up a Database query in the GamesDB moderation and system is suggesting it or people can suggest linked games. Moderators have to approved it and that's all on that place. BUT as long as Launchbox and BigBox is using xml Files for storing the Games Data it will be a heck of a problem simple because it is more complex and way slower than a common database. you see the performance gap already in starting launchbox with a lot automatic filtered lists in it.
