Let my Steam friends know that I launched a game

It's cool to have my friends (on Steam) get a desktop notification when I start a game.

To that end I currently add most games into steam as a 'non-steam game', create a desktop shortcut for them in Steam, then add that shortcut as the executable for the game in Launchbox.

This means whenever I launch a game from launchbox, my friends can see that I have started playing (because it launches the game via the steam shortcut).

This doesn't work well for emulators though, as several ROMs will use the same executable.

Is there any way to streamline this process? I don't know if Steam has any sort of local API or hooks, but if you had a way to toggle notifying friends on Steam about game launches, I think people would enjoy using it.

(At one point I tried creating a dummy exe, adding it to steam with the game's name, then launching the shortcut to it as an 'additional application' in the Launchbox options for the emulated game, but that didn't work for whatever reason. ~shrug~)
