Possibly integrate simple 3D rendering for box-art

Issue #4772 new
Daniel Bentz created an issue

Currently LaunchBox/BigBox utilize 2D images of pre-rendered 3D objects for box-art and carts, which overall has a pretty amazing and mostly consistent result, however, I was curious if there was any possibility to integrate some very low level 3D rendering for some of these things to present even HIGHER levels of consistency across displays, such that a single 3D model for known cartridges and game boxes could have standard 2d images applied to them to create those 3D shapes dynamically instead of depending on some hopefully-consistent pre-rendered images. I have actually done a fair bit of modelling and animation for games in the past, so if the assets are by any means a road-block or bottleneck I'd be happy to provide some test assets if it would help.

An excellent idea; I have previously raised this request in June 2018 (albeit possibly in the wrong forum) -

Jason had replied that "3D boxes are still something I would like to do at some point" - so that gives some cause for optimism!

I would agree with your post word for word. A single 3D model with the correct dimensions for each platform, with the 2D images applied to those. I suppose with certain physical media the spines may be an issue, as the front/rear box art does not typically include the spines - though many of the current "static" 3D boxes do have these and so I'm sure it could be easily addressed.

A database of these true 3D boxes could be built up on the Launchbox database too. Hopefully this is picked up on and your kind offer of help accepted!

Wiiflow was also a great example of how this can be implemented and look sleek without being overly resource intensive.
