Pin Code option to unlock certain playlists.

Issue #5082 new
Cid created an issue

Please implement an option in BigBox or LaunchBox settings to lock any playlist we choose
And prevent all these games under these locked playlists to appear during Attract Mode.

So when these locked playlists are selected by our kids on BigBox, they will ask them for the Universal Pin Code that unlocks them
This way the kids can't access these playlists or see or play these locked playlists games.

For example, I love Horror Games but I don't want my kids to see or play them when I'm not at home
See the picture I attached as an example and many thanks in advance.

+1, In my library of games, there are some violent games that I might not let kids see when letting them browse the games.
It would be so cool if this option is implemented.

  2. robert

yes please. and I want to add: the locked playlist should ask for the pin code every time it's selected in the same gaming session.
I mean if the parents unlocked these playlists to play games then they have to leave for a sudden work, they just have to go back to the "playlists view" and that's it.
this is how the Pin Code should work for the Playlists IMHO. we should not restart BigBox/ System to make the Unlock feature to work again.

It would be great if we could have this!
I am setting up a system with a target to let children play. I also want to play games, but not all the games I play are suitable for them.
This option can solve all the issue for me :)

I think what you're asking for is a good idea and I believe it will be used for many scenarios. good job and I hope it will be implemented in the upcoming releases.

    Count me in!
My kids don't want violent content because they don't like it, and so they don't want to see it.

  6. Freddy

It would be great if you could lock the playlist from playing but also lock the playlist from editing….so 4 possibilities could be selected (lock playing and also lock add&remove items

this way, I could set it up so that my kids could change their playlists but not mine

being in the home in this current situation and spending most of my time playing games with my kids, I realized how much I need this feature for my games collection. please make this happen. thanks and best wishes to everyone.

Nice! I mainly use playlists, and I have many gory games in my collection. This ability is definitely needed to lock playlists for those type of situations when you're not in control.
I mean we can just create playlists for all the games that are not appropriate for kids and when the kids try to open these playlists, the password box will pop up. Very nice indeed!

I want to make a kid friendly playlist using the playlists feature. And this will resolve all the problems when I do so. Please do it guys.

a bigbox parental restrictions is a must have imho. it would be great to have this feature since it will solve all the different ratings systems around the world. also, a lot of classic/old games are not rated by any ratings system which didn't become a thing until the early to mid nineties. i believe this feature will unites all these differences under one umbrella (playlist in this case). this is a great and easy solution for everyone actually.

The team is still working on mid-2019 poll items that users voted to be implemented, plus other normal LB/BB enhancements. So it may not be a high priority item that would have been worked on outside of the poll items. Just have to see if it garners enough votes when the next poll comes out. Not all software comes with parental controls whether or not one feels it should from the start or not.

At this point we do not know when the next poll will take place.

  12. Eric

I respectfully understand, but a feature like this does not need a poll or something. BigBox should have some sort of parental control from the get-go IMHO. I mean it's no brainer. But again I understand and appreciate all the hard and great work the developers done and still do to improve and enhance this masterpiece. All the best to everyone.

As seen many Parental Controls requests pop up lately, I started a deep search for them all here, and after I did much research and comparison on the subject, I want to say this idea here is the BEST so far when considering how many rating systems there are in the world, and how many games exist before rating system was a thing. This idea is reliable, easy to use by everyone and direct to the point. I personally love to see this idea implemented for Parental Control.
Also +1 @robert comment, yes, this is easy and robust at the same time.

  14. Brian

this is just perfect! please do it guys. this feature is essential to bigbox and it's simple and perfect imho.

a locked playlist will prevent the kids from seeing the games that are not suitable for them.
way better than having a user profile (user profiles do take away the feel of having an arcade like set up) also, user profiles might be more work than most people are willing to put into their collection.

a playlist with a password lock feature is the way to go for any user novice or expert.

    Hello everyone,

I'm the OP of the "Pin-Locked Games" suggestion. Thank you so much for voting for this suggestion and all the other great suggestions from the other members of this nice and great community. It's really humbling to see my suggestion make it on the 2021 new features list. I'm really happy about this and I sincerely thank everyone to make this happen.

As a final request to the awesome developers, please make the mechanism as "Lock" NOT only "hide" or at least an option for "Lock". I mean it will be great if we can see the game tile with everything related to it like the background and video and notes... etc.... but when we click on "Play" (when on BigBox mode) it will ask us for the pin code to unlock this game to be able to play it. And it should do that every time we select "Play" in the same game section. I think this is the best option for many of us. So please make it at least an option instead of hiding only.

Many thanks again for everyone and best regards to all.

Surely the best option would be to have profiles for different users that an admin sets and for each profile they can set which ESRB ratings are available from E, E10+,T,M,AO, RP. I know a lot are currently set as “Not Rated” or ESRB=RP which would be included as an option to enable/disable, but over time they could be set in the Launchbox db by a community effort. This is how Plex handles parental controls. The same rating could be applied to whole Playlists. If a rating is not suitable for a user then the content should not even be shown as videos or artwork might also be offensive.

If TeamLB are not addressing it, a simple pre-launcher app where user chooses the profile (optional pincode) and swaps Launchbox folders in/out could be a temporary solution (use junctions). Or even a simple batch file on their own windows profile that does it prior to running BigBox.

You can easily clone your existing Data\Platforms\*.xml folder and regex using Notepad++ to remove all games with a certain ESRB, or whole playlists then just swap the folders in/out.

You could even just create a new instance of Launchbox and use junctions to map the existing Games, Images, Manuals, Videos onto it to avoid duplication then clone the data folder and make above adjustments to the Platforms\*.xml files to kidify it. Use different windows profiles and only have that version accessible.

The Pin Code is the best way i think, like steam family view. A E10+ game could be playable by your 8-9 years old kid and and a E rated game could be bad for another. I would prefer to manually choose which games my kids can play.

  18. Duncan

I dont understand why the highest most wanted feature has zero feedback from the devs for literal years? Its not like this is a big ask either. If pin is wrong, dont launch. It could even be in plain text somewhere in the catacombs of the launchbox dir. If a kid is smart enough to find that then they deserve to see zombie boobies.

If we are talking about “logging in” and multiple users based on game rating thats a bit more involved and also way more work for the end user to make sure unrated boobies2000 games dont accidentally fall through the cracks..
