I would love to be able to add extras like maps and guides in PDF-format like we see the manuals being used today!

    Already possible as an additional application. Right click and edit the game. Add the pdf as an additional app. If you use the Pause Theme option available in LB/BB it will show .pdf files added as an additional app in the Pause menu options.
