This is most likely due to you trying to use a really old version of MAME with this wizard.

Which version of MAME were you trying to use with it?

    I tried two things:

    • tried to have the wizard auto download and install mame for me (v.0.16)

    • when that didn't work I tried manually using a copy of mame I already have (v.0.16)- this also resulted in the error

Version 0.16 is in the wizard drop down list so figured that it's supported. What is the oldest version of mame that's supported?

Believe the command we use only works on MAME 0.162 or newer. We can take a look at making that list reflect that.

Would this mean manually using your own 0.16 should work? I can't get that to work either. Do you recommend downloading a newer rom set? I wanted to use this one because I already have it (it works when using it independently from LB) and it's 402GB, would be inconvenient to search for and download again at a newer version. Do you think if I tell the wizard to use 0.162 that could work?

You would have to use the ROM importer to get a version that old to work properly in LaunchBox.

0.16 is from 1997, so I do recommend using a newer version than that if you want to utilize all the new features of MAME and all the integration we have done.

wow had no idea it goes that far back, that's super interesting! I'll work on getting the latest version, surprised this one even works on on Windows 10 and on another Windows 11 machine??!!!
