3D model box - remove vertical rotation & keep horizontal

Issue #7385 new
RetroFrogg created an issue

At least as an option, could we have the ability to remove the vertical rotation of the 3D model boxes in Launchbox? When rotating them with the mouse currently, it's quite hard to stop it rotating in the vertical plane and makes controlling the rotation kind of difficult. We really only need to see the front, back and sides of the box - I don't think seeing the top or bottom adds anything. Furthermore, whilst spine scans are relatively prevalent, top and bottom scans are often difficult to come by.

As an example, see this user's implementation, where only horizontal rotation is possible; it makes rotating the boxes nice and easy:

The top/bottom thing isn’t true for all platforms. Super Nintendo for example the spines go on the top and bottom and not on the left and right.

OK, I stand corrected. I would maintain that this would still be a useful option - ideally per platform, to accommodate what you mention. When the vertical axis is locked, it’s much easier to rotate and view the box. An option for this would likely be the best way forward.

I’d also like to see something like this implemented on a per-platform basis in Launchbox under the 3d model settings tab, perhaps something like:

    Lock Vertical Rotation [X]

    Lock Horizontal Rotation [X]

As a lesser alternative, perhaps keybindings could be set in Launchbox for rotating the box, just like they can be in BigBox?

I notice that a number of users on the forums have mentioned the difficulty in rotating the 3D model boxes in Launchbox. When using the mouse, the box tends to flip about a lot and it’s hard to rotate it just horizontally.
