After they scour the prison of known walkers, they fortify a cell block, where they store food and supplies and lock themselves in cells at night. Despite these precautions, they are always on the prowl for walkers, who manage to invade the compound.

Defending this sanctuary from forces within and without becomes of paramount importance to Rick and his group, as they recuperate from their nomadic existence.

They ward off an attack from the Governor and his group from Woodbury in season 3, despite their small numbers and limited weaponry. The Governor's group was lured into the prison itself, when they met little resistance from Rick's band outside. In the dark corridors, the walkers cut down several members of the Governor's group, leaving them terrified, disoriented and eager to flee.

Then season 4 introduced an illness that killed several Woodbury survivors in Rick's group, turning the prison into a slaughterhouse. Each infected person could become a walker, unless he or she was stabbed in the head upon death. Placing the sick and dying in quarantine only heightened the danger to those who were surviving the virus within this seclusion, when the walkers eventually attacked.

Midway through season 4, the Governor returns to the prison, determined to overthrow Rick's group and seize the stronghold. The Governor murders two alpha males in the new camp he joins and appoints himself its leader with the singular mission of taking the prison.

The irresistible siren song of the prison's promise of security has, in effect, made prisoners of both groups. They need its protection, but death surrounds its walls and lingers inside.

The Governor will kill anyone for it, but Rick and his group refuse to surrender it and the community they built there.

The prison, originally constructed to keep convicts in and everyone else out, creates a belief among survivors that it is impenetrable.

This enviable fortress, a character itself in "The Walking Dead," certainly presents a better option to camping in the woods and wandering from place to place.

But the actual safety the prison provides is debatable, possibly a siren song.
