post pilerimport cleanup?

I can't seem to find any documentation on files left over after running pilerimport. I am left with a directory of a1 files as well as the mbox that was imported. Do I need to retain these for any reason (are they used for search or attachment retrieval or reindexing?) or can they be deleted to reclaim the space?

pilerimport writes some temporary files while processing emails. After importing they can be removed safely. Normally they are cleaned up automatically, but occasionally piler fails to remove them.
