I just realized that my original code didn't work properly
ss = f.readlines() was returning empty lines with '\n' in them, so "if s" in [s.strip() for s in ss if s and not s.startswith('#')] didn't ignore those lines
ss = f.read().splitlines() removes '\n' characters. Tested it, seems to work
