Advanced configuration of CMAS/WEA in Messages app

Issue #287 on hold
G created an issue

Greetings,

On my HTC One M8 Verizon phone, I've received several "Commercial Mobile Alert System" test alerts over the course of my phone ownership. These produce a very loud multi-tone sound and don't appear to have any sort of way to be disabled. If you look in the app list, an "Emergency Alerts" app is available which is basically a hidden configuration menu in the stock Messages app that lets you configure these alerts to a certain degree.

On my phone, you can chose what kind of alerts to receive (Presidential, Extreme, Severe, Amber), and how often they repeat. I'd still like to be able to receive Presidential/Extreme alerts, but nothing else, especially these annoying test alerts.

If possible, I'd like to have these options:

  • Disable the tone completely or configure how the alert is handled
  • Disable test alerts
  • Disable the CMAS system entirely

Is there any chance of these being implemented?

I don't even have such options, it's US only I think. It will be hard to make a mod blindly.

If it's a part of Messages app then it'll be even harder. Messaging mods are no longer available on Lollipop, because SMS app is obfuscated.

Yeah, definitely a US feature. That's unfortunate, this CMAS thing is getting pretty annoying (for me and other users as well). If there's any way I can help, let me know.
