Cannot disable hardware button backlights

On HTC One (M7), the option shows up just fine in the app, but setting it to 'always off' doesn't have the desired effect. Rebooted several times, and other mods do work, so framework and module are installed correctly. 100% stock, rooted (SuperSU) 5.11.401.10 ROM

Sorry for the late response, forgot to check back here.

Using version 1.2.6 now, still appears to be broken. I tried looking at the dim options, and though it is a little hard to tell, I don't think those are working either.

The following app does work correctly, so maybe you can look at the way they did it (not sure if this is helpful at all):
