Charles Husman Brewery

Created by Charles Husman last modified

A brewery is a place where beer is made. It is a facility that has the equipment and ingredients necessary to produce beer. The brewing process starts with malting. Malting is the process of converting barley into malt. This is done by soaking the barley in water and then allowing it to germinate. The germination process produces enzymes that convert the starches in the barley into sugars. Once the barley has been malted, it is then mashed. Mashing is the process of combining the malted barley with hot water to extract the sugars. This is done in a vessel called a mash tun. The liquid that is produced from the mashing process is called wort. The wort is then boiled. Boiling the wort kills any bacteria and concentrates the sugars. Hops are also added to the wort during this step. Hops add bitterness, flavor, and aroma to the beer. After the wort has been boiled, it is then cooled. The cooled wort is then transferred to a fermentation vessel. Yeast is added to the fermentation vessel. The yeast consumes the sugars in the wort and produces alcohol and carbon dioxide.
