Issue #124 wontfix

Search history support

Anonymous created an issue

Looks like history search is not implemented (typing first '/' and entering something, then typing again '/' with Up to cycle through search patterns).

This can become quite handy, especially when are searched things with longer regex pattern. Will it be hard to add this feature?

It is implemented if you use evil's own search module (customize-variable RET evil-search-module RET. Otherwise the search is essentially the usual Emacs isearch.

Aaah, didn't know for this :) Cool, thanks!

Btw. is there some reasons why it is not on by default? At least history feature will be quite useful for out of the box Evil module.

isearch is an old and stable package of Emacs, that's why it is prefered. Evil's own search module has been developed to provide the interactive substitute command :s and using it for plain search is somehow an addon. When using the isearch module / is more or less the same as the usual C-s (or M-C-s). Ah, and I forgot, you can use M-n and M-p in the isearch module to cycle through the search history.

Feel free to reopen if <up> and <down> instead of M-n or M-p are required. Although this would be another Emacs vs. Vim compatiblity issue (i.e., whether it's preferable to preserve Emacs behavior or not).
