I"m not sure that a depth of 9 by default is a good idea. Nevertheless, one should handle the exception.

    It would have helped to include the URL where you encountered the error...

    I threw more memory at it, should work now, for most category trees

    I'm sure that it was https://petscan.wmflabs.org/ on the French Wikipedia to get the category "Informatique" with a depth of 9, and it's working now (with 871,645 results).
