Suggestion: show Google Translate translation of text
When the text is in a language I can't read, I paste it into another window I keep open on Google Translate. With "Detect Language" on it usually correctly detects the language and shows me an English translation. From that I can work out the gender of the person or the person-ness of the entity.
If you automatically included the Google Translate English version, it would save the step. For bonus points, you could have a setting with the target language for the translations.

translatewiki.net used to have Google translate, and when their free API was discontinued, they eventually switched to Microsoft's and Yandex's. It could be worth looking into those. @Nikerabbit, any insights on this?

Yandex is down most of the time or all the time for us (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50861 ), Microsoft may be more generous (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41435 ). As a workaround, Chromium/Chrome is able to translate without limits.
