"We know where you are! ;-)" appears also when opening URL sent by friend

Issue #9 open
Nicolas Raoul created an issue

Steps:

  1. Receive via email/web link the URL https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikishootme/index.html#lat=24.33890408723922&lng=123.96468400955202&zoom=15
  2. Click on it
  3. Click on the grey button
  4. Wonder why the message "We know where you are! ;-)" appear

I guess the message is for people with geolocation. If from search or URL, the message should be different, or the message should encompass all usage patterns, for instance "Here you are! ;-)"

The message is obviously incorrectly worded - it shows where the referenced location is, not where the user is.

The second problem is that this gray buton overlaps other points in the same location, making them unclickable - and it is not possible to turn off the grey button through the menu and level settings.

Actually, the problem seems to have been fixed. When clicking the link above, nothing grey is visible. I will thus close this issue.

SJu: If anything is unclickable, zooming in might solve it? If not, you can try creating an issue asking for deeper zoom, in that case please include a zoomed link and screenshot of a place where Wikidata density makes the tool unusable. Cheers :-)

Thank You, the original problem as well as the additional problem added by me seem to be really solved now.

I tested now the process which caused (if I remember it correctly) the problem in the past:

    1. open any Wikidata item with coordinates (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18397236),
    2. I click to the coordinetes which generates the link https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=49.04_N_13.50438083_E_globe:earth&language=cs
    3. I choose “WikiShootMe” link https://wikishootme.toolforge.org/#lat=49.04&lng=13.504381&zoom=15

The grey button appears in one short moment at the location during loading of the map, but is covered by the red or green item button (which is a bit darker than other red or green buttons due its translucence) and doesn’t obstruct a clicking. The grey button is in the bottom layer. In the past this was not the case in some cases, but I'm not sure if it was exactly the same process.

If I find that the grey button prevents clicking in some other situation, I will open a new report. However I hope the problem is solved and the report can be closed.

So unfortunately, both problems still persist.

    1. Find an image with coordinates, e.g. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lovosice,_dálniční_most_II.jpg
    2. Click the coordinates, e.g. https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=File:Lovosice,_dálniční_most_II.jpg&params=050.514333_N_0014.021086_E_globe:Earth_type:camera_heading:135.00&language=cs
    3. Click the WikiShootMe link: https://wikishootme.toolforge.org/#lat=50.514333&lng=14.021086&zoom=16
    4. The map shows in its centre a larger gray circle behind which a hidden small circle shines through
    5. When you click on the circles, a message “We know where you are! 😉” (although I'm sitting at home at the computer and I'm certainly not in the given place)
    6. The small blue circle of the photo is hidden and unavailable.

The text in the point 5 and the behavior in the point 6 are persisting bugs.

  5. SJu

When two or more different circles have their center in exactly the same place, then no zoom change can ensure the clickability of the hidden bottom circle. That’s another bug that such cases are not treated.

Interesting, for me the “We know where you are! ;-)" grey circle disappears on Firefox, but not on Chrome.
