Having discussed this with Marine, it should be. However it appears that it hasn’t been for a very long time - far enough back that I haven’t been able to find/run a version of any viewer which does.
I’ll fix this and issue a pull request as discussed.

I’ve just tried it with Henri’s Cool VL viewer and that does apply @recvim to group IM reception, silently discarding them

Update (for when it’s time to document this in Release Notes). When @recvim=n is active, receiving a group IM will not cause a new IM session floater to be opened (Kokua, RLV, FS and others). However, in viewers without this pull request it’s possible to manually join the group chat, so forcing the floater to open, after which unrestricted received IMs can be read.
