Investigate performance benefits of NIO buffers and Unsafe

At the moment, the basic data stores use primitive arrays which are fast and simple, but do theoretically (and most likely) incur an index validation on access.

It's possible that NIO buffers (because of being direct memory), or using Unsafe (to avoid checking the index) could add performance to the data store access.
