high accuracy laser scanner for cracks authors: jun-ho kim (the university of akron) abstract: a high-accuracy crack sensor using a self-developed laser scanner has been developed to measure the cracks in concrete. an slm (spherical-laser) scanner with a 5-deg beam spot (beam diameter) is designed and fabricated. the calibration model was used to measure the optical deviation of a laser beam spot. the spot size of a slm is 0.2mm×0.2mm. the spot size was a factor of 4 larger than the beam spot (0.1mm×0.1mm). beam deflection was calibrated with an optical bench and a sample plate. the measured deflection was 2.3μm, which was 20 times larger than the beam spot (0.02mm). deflection of a slm was calibrated by a laser beam and a stage with a high accuracy. the deflection was less than 2μm. the crack sensor was developed to measure the cracks in concrete with high accuracy. the crack sensor was used to measure the cracks of concrete. the laser scanner was compared with a video crack detector and a laser range finder. the results of the experiment shows that the measured crack widths were between 14μm and 20μm, which were comparable to the values measured by a video crack detector. this study evaluated the reliability of a laser scanner designed to detect cracks in pavement (asphalt and concrete) pavement. the results indicate that it is possible to use this device as a crack sensor, with acceptable reliability for crack detection in the range of 20 to 80 mm in width. the method of crack detection is based on the differences in the reflectivity from the surface of pavement between the cracked pavement and non-cracked pavement. the reflected laser beam is used to calculate the minimum distance (r) between the surface of the pavement and the surface of the laser head. this distance is then used to determine the width of the crack. to date, a laser scanner has not been used for crack detection in concrete pavement. it is expected that this type of sensor will lead to a more effective pavement management tool. this type of crack sensor could be useful in a variety of applications including airport pavement, parking lots, highway pavement, road pavement, and bridge pavement. 6a6f617c0c
