Algorithm for md5/sha1 hash unclear

Hi there - not really an issue but not sure how else to contact the authors. Are you able to clarify how the md5/sha1 is calculated?

I tried reading the source but it wasn't clear to me (it's been a while since I wrote C). Thanks!
