Peerexplorer
Peerexplorer.com is a really nice project and seems like a good way to "pay" people for running nodes.

reporter I registered my VPS node nrs01.nxtsolaris.info with peerexplorer on Feb 26th. Until today, March 12th, I've received 103NXT through peerexplore caches. That's around 220 NXT (~ US$ 10) per months (if it goes on like this).
I'm paying US$5 per months for this VPS (budgetVM.com).
Bottom line: With peerexplorer.com there is a working way of funding running NRS nodes.

I wonder if the owner would open source peerexplorer for a bounty or similar app?

"We call this activity peercaching. Its a hide and seek game between sponsors and server owners. Claimed online servers will receive every 6 hours caches by this simple formula: ceil(Total not found active caches / Total claimed servers online). Which cache you find is totaly random, 1 cache maximum in 6 hours."
This model favors running more nodes than a particular size of node. So there's a value increased network size but I'm not sure how that translates to quality.
Node operators should be rewarded for quality service and not just merely existing.

Adding 100+ nodes to peerexplorer is brutally painful. Hand editing 100+ property files (usually autogenerated) pretty much sucks.
Definitely needs some kind of API and simpler way to do auth.

I added 31 nodes and will calculate earned caches for a week. Also, since I've already received NXT for these nodes, I can donate it back to peer explorer or to our fund. I'll write up a little report on the experience from the perspective of a node owner.

Ferment: As long as we define SLAs for payment, it might be a good way to simplify the job.
