Preg causes blank screen for moodle/index.php

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install 2.4.5 
2. Install preg or full preg 5 item archive from Google Code
3. Update database 

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Moodle front page or course pages

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
2.4.5 on Centos with WHM/cPanel

Please provide any additional information below.
Is this a known issue? Is there a workaround? What version of 2.4 works with preg q-type?

For Moodle 2.4.5 you should use Preg 2.3.1+ https://code.google.com/p/oasychev-moodle-plugins/downloads/detail?name=preg_231_release.zip&can=2&q=

Preg 2.5 will work only on Moodle 2.5 and higher, as it relies on certain features,
added in these versions.
