Mandatory to implement grant type in the VCI for the interoperability?

Issue #1733 closed
Kristina Yasuda created an issue

Options are

  • mandate the Credential Issuer to implement one of the grants (pre-authorized/authorization)
  • mandate both Credential Issuer and the Wallet to implement one of the grants
  • do not mandate anything - it’s a framework, not a protocol - no guaranteed interoperability

Generally speaking I think it is a good idea for standards to mandate that the simplest scheme be implemented by all, and make more complex schemes optional. But this is not the approach that we have taken with OID4VCs overall and I can point to many areas where we have left it a free for all.

So the first rule we should follow is “be consistent”. Which do we prefer: mandatory minimum to implement or free for all?

VCI is a framework, so I do not see the standard mandating any grant, just like rfc6749 did not mandate any. might have to come back later, but ok closing for now.
