R6400 High CPU.

Issue #286 resolved
txnative created an issue

After updating the repo with fetch && pull my R6400 was not more than 6 hrs on VPN build.

  • disabled dnssec.
  • disabled upnp.
  • disabled qos I normally don’t leave upnp and qos enabled.
  • no jffs enabled.
  • disabled adblock.
  • no temperature issue on cpu or wifi radios.

dnssec, upnp, qos were the only apps running/enabled at the time.

no ipv6 was configured, nvram usage was normal:

Used / Total NVRAM 32.62 KB / 128.00 KB (25.48%)
Used / Total RAM 23.90 MB / 249.49 MB (9.58%)

Router handling internet connection became slow intermittant, this was my time to check on the modem first then the R6400 all leds were in normal operation, logging in was slow and after the above was performed I ultimately had to reboot, the above nvram/ram was the same as it was when the cpu was running high.

So far the R6400 is running normal, possible one time thing I will monitor it for now.

I didn’t experience this type of behavior in the previous fetch && pull on AIO build except the router boots 20 seconds longer after the 90 second window counter ends, the same amount of time was also noticed on the VPN build.

I can send the what I have later.

Regards

Sorry for the above mix up.

Trying to add the dmesg as attachment and it didn’t take?

I flashed back to oem to check if 5GHz was damaged that would cause it to stop working since I last left this report, there is nothing wrong with the R6400 with oem flashed.

The oem version 1.0.1.78 had shown that 5GHz has been working throughout the time I had last reported the issues indicated from 2023.2 build on the router I own there is nothing wrong and functions properly.

I had just recently flashed initial 2023.3 .chk/vpn images from R6400 oem version 1.0.1.78 today and will monitor it at least for a few days.

The previous build took a bit of time to boot and the cpu would go up to 100 percent until I had disabled wifi for a few moments then enabled but it would still continue to rise after an hour or later, 5GHz wifi would also stop working at diferent times of the day, in order to bring is back up the cli can be used “wl -i eth2 up” would get to start working.

There was no data in any syslog or “top” output other than 5GHz would be active then later it disappeared, when the 5GHz stop working the the client device was showing that it was connected to the 2.4GHz.

Interesting enough the .chk wasn’t accepted through netgear gui and so I set up nmrpflash to the FreshTomato .chk to flash and continue to upgrade the vpn 2023.3 build from freshtomato.org/downloads

I will continue to monitor for any change and repeat any steps with a syslog and screen capture or copy paste from “top” cmd.

    Best regards

Build 2023.3 on the R6400 had no issue on uptime, 5Ghz no down time or no high cpu at least for the 48 hr time frame which would’ve had been plague with all those issues mentioned within the time frame of 48 hrs.

Router boots good as expected before in previous builds before 2023.2.

We can close this bug report that was only on buid 2023.2, build 2023.3 is working properly on my end.

    Best regards
