In your .emacs, load the .el:

(load "~/mmm-mako.el")

Then specify the extensions to use with mmm-mako mode:

(add-to-list 'auto-mode-alist '("\\.mako\\'" . html-mode))
(mmm-add-mode-ext-class 'html-mode "\\.mako\\'" 'mako)

mmm-mode can sometimes become confused about submode regions. This is
especially noticable when mmm-mode syntax coloring
(mmm-submode-decoration-level) is enabled. It's likely to happen when hitting
<return> at the end of Mako ## or % one-liners, or if insertion commands aren't
used when creating new Mako tags/constructs.

Forcing mmm-mode to refresh the buffer (via the mmm-parse-buffer function) will
fix this when it occurs. To bind that function to the M-p key sequence, add to
your .emacs:

(global-set-key "\M-p" 'mmm-parse-buffer)
