Read request data from file is always grey'ed out

No matter what option I select in the WebSocket request-response Sampler, the Read request data from file option is grey'ed out. What am I missing here?
The docs don't mention much about this feature other than vars can't be read when using it.

Hmm, maybe it’s just the UI that is confusing you. The input field for the filename is greyed out and disabled, but you can enable it by checking the box…
