The main README of latexcodec says:

Instead of using latexcodec, I encourage you to consider pylatexenc instead, which is far superior: <https://github.com/phfaist/pylatexenc>

Perhaps it's time to switch.

I had issues with latexcodec (see https://github.com/mcmtroffaes/latexcodec/issues/96), which would be fixed by moving to pylatexenc.
