Topics of the week
===================

new snake server
--------------------------

Armin reported that the snake server will be replaced by something that can be put into a server room. At the moment he is making the new server ready by copying the whole hard drive of the old server over therefore he wants notification if someone changes something in his home dir on the current machine. He will tell when the new server is ready on #pypy. Everybody who wants an account (and does not have one at the moment) should send him an eMail.

gothenburg sprint announcement
------------------------------

We talked (again) about possible tasks at the gothenburg sprint. The topics
list we had discussed at a previous meeting seems fairly complete, although
WP09 and WP10 tasks where missing. Anders L. and Adrien agreed that it would
make more sense to tackle WP09 tasks at the sprint, maybe something like adding
logic variables to PyPy. Armin promised to check in a new version of the topics
today and Carl will contact Bea (who wanted to send out the announcement).

    Nov 10 13:05:34 mwh	:)
Nov 10 13:06:04 cfbolz	ok, let's move on to the only topic :-)
Nov 10 13:06:09 cfbolz	armin, would you please?
Nov 10 13:06:20 cfbolz	New snake server
    Nov 10 13:06:20 cfbolz	----------------
Nov 10 13:06:44 arigo	Dusseldorf people insisted to switch to a server that looks like a server and not a desktop machine
Nov 10 13:07:02 cfbolz	I think that is very funny :-)
Nov 10 13:07:05 arigo	however, until I thought, it will be a bit faster and more RAMmed than the current snake, which is good
    Nov 10 13:07:16 arigo	s/until/unlike
    Nov 10 13:07:33 mwh	uni-processor?
Nov 10 13:07:47 arigo	yes, a single hyperthreaded one like now, I think
    Nov 10 13:07:49 arigo	but I don't know
    Nov 10 13:07:51 mwh	ok
Nov 10 13:08:00 arigo	they messed up and I installed everything on a machine which is not the one they meant for me :-/
    Nov 10 13:08:06 arigo	so we'll see
    Nov 10 13:08:08 mwh	argh :(
    Nov 10 13:08:17 cfbolz	oops
Nov 10 13:08:23 mwh	so, timeline?
    Nov 10 13:08:27 arigo	today-tomorrow
Nov 10 13:08:38 arigo	(anyone that wants an account on this server, just ask me)
Nov 10 13:09:07 mwh	i take i'll have one already?
Nov 10 13:09:22 arigo	sure, everything is copied over
    Nov 10 13:09:27 mwh	cool
Nov 10 13:09:31 arigo	for now you can still use the existing snake,
Nov 10 13:09:48 arigo	but tell me if you log in and make changes to your home directories in case I already did the copy
Nov 10 13:09:59 arigo	(feel free to do that, rsync is not a problem)
Nov 10 13:10:20 arigo	I'll mention on #pypy when the switch is about to be done and when it's finished.
Nov 10 13:10:27 cfbolz	very good!
Nov 10 13:10:39 ericvrp	arigo: will the passwords also be copied over?
Nov 10 13:10:46 arigo	yes, the whole root file system
    Nov 10 13:10:55 arigo	rsync -a :-)
    Nov 10 13:11:09 ericvrp	'kay
Nov 10 13:11:15 arigo	(also because I don't feel like keeping SuSE on that machine :-)
Nov 10 13:11:44 arigo	all in all it should continue to be a good machine to run and test translations on.
Nov 10 13:11:51 arigo	(that's it for me)
    Nov 10 13:12:12 cfbolz	great
Nov 10 13:12:15 cfbolz	any other topics?
Nov 10 13:12:24 mwh	gtbg sprint announcement?
    Nov 10 13:12:30 cfbolz	indeed
Nov 10 13:12:39 cfbolz	arigo: did bea answer?
Nov 10 13:13:00 arigo	I didn't mail her so far
    Nov 10 13:13:09 cfbolz	oh, I see
Nov 10 13:13:20 arigo	we first need to detail the technical goals a bit more, I guess
Nov 10 13:13:43 cfbolz	does it make sense to talk about that now
    Nov 10 13:13:44 cfbolz	?
    Nov 10 13:14:26 arigo	http://codespeak.net/svn/pypy/extradoc/sprintinfo/gothenburg-2005/announcement.txt
Nov 10 13:14:36 arigo	is this like reasonable / complete ?
Nov 10 13:15:11 cfbolz	I guess one question is whether lobilab/dfki guys want to work on their workpackages
Nov 10 13:15:29 mwh	reasonable, yes
Nov 10 13:15:32 mwh	complete, no idea
Nov 10 13:15:45 adim	cfbolz: could be a godd idea I guess
Nov 10 13:16:13 arigo	but the details are still to be discussed, I gather?
Nov 10 13:16:23 cfbolz	probably yes
Nov 10 13:16:37 cfbolz	I guess it should be mentioned in the announcement
Nov 10 13:16:55 cfbolz	there might be people interested in semantic web/logic stuff
    Nov 10 13:17:00 mwh	"* kick off WP09 implementation" ?
    Nov 10 13:17:07 adim	yes
    Nov 10 13:17:11 arigo	WP9 specifically? not WP10?
    Nov 10 13:17:18 mwh	arigo: i forget :)
Nov 10 13:17:21 adim	(detailint what is WP09 and 10)
    Nov 10 13:17:25 mwh	yes
Nov 10 13:17:48 mwh	the wp number -> title mapping isn't something i've ever been able to remember
Nov 10 13:17:59 cfbolz	mwh: you get used to it :-)
Nov 10 13:18:10 aleale	WP 9 logic programming /Semantic web
Nov 10 13:18:27 mwh	cfbolz: apparently not
    Nov 10 13:18:40 aleale	WP 10 AOP /contracts
    Nov 10 13:18:49 mwh	aleale: i see
Nov 10 13:19:16 arigo	so any more insights about which one you'd like to focus on, or just both?
    Nov 10 13:19:42 aleale	I am focusing on WP9
    Nov 10 13:19:46 adim	maybe more WP09
Nov 10 13:20:13 adim	(I should check with Ludovic first, though)
Nov 10 13:20:35 cfbolz	could you do that today?
Nov 10 13:21:02 adim	cfbolz: don't think he'll come here today
    Nov 10 13:21:10 adim	but I'll try
Nov 10 13:21:17 arigo	WP09 Task 1 talks about porting Logilab's python-logic libraries to PyPy. Should we mention that in the announcement?
Nov 10 13:21:20 adim	just put WP09 on the sprint announcement
Nov 10 13:21:51 arigo	or do you want to focus on issues like putting logic variables in the Python language?
Nov 10 13:22:13 adim	I guess the latter is probably a better idea for the sprint
Nov 10 13:22:24 adim	aleale: your opinion ?
Nov 10 13:22:41 arigo	let's use conditionals in the announcement
    Nov 10 13:22:52 cfbolz	:-)
    Nov 10 13:22:54 adim	:)
Nov 10 13:22:55 aleale	I agree - that is the first step
Nov 10 13:23:44 arigo	* (WP09) Experiment with logic programming in Python. A
Nov 10 13:23:44 arigo first step might be to try to add logic variables to PyPy.
Nov 10 13:23:51 adim	ok for me
Nov 10 13:23:54 mwh	sounds good!
Nov 10 13:24:12 cfbolz	to me too
Nov 10 13:24:28 arigo	ok, I can expand a bit the other topics of the announcement too
Nov 10 13:25:10 mwh	and presumably there's going to some copying and pasting from other announcements
    Nov 10 13:25:18 cfbolz	probably
Nov 10 13:25:26 cfbolz	I guess we should check with bea nonetheless
Nov 10 13:25:55 cfbolz	arigo: I can do that, if you want
Nov 10 13:26:11 arigo	ok, thanks
Nov 10 13:26:31 cfbolz	and we should really try to send it out tomorrow...
    Nov 10 13:26:40 arigo	indeed
Nov 10 13:26:55 cfbolz	arigo: would you try to update the topics today?
    Nov 10 13:27:42 arigo	yes
Nov 10 13:27:55 cfbolz	ok. fine if we close the meeting ?
Nov 10 13:28:00 adim	fine with me
    Nov 10 13:28:04 arigo	yes

    Nov 10 13:28:37 mwh	bye
