Data is not just for technologists and researchers -- journalists, government workers, designers, and NGOs all use or want data in some way shape or form and in India the challenges around getting data and using it are unique and require a dedicated platform to work out solutions.

This includes looking at how to make data open so that it’s potential to create more accountability and transparency to improve policies and implementation of projects across industry, citizen sector organizations, and governance.

-
Data Camp will provide that platform for Indians to work out what are the problems around getting data and using it to further their projects and enhance the impact they want to make.

The people behind the event are on the DataMeet group. Primary organizers are, Nisha Thompson, Thejesh GN, S Anand, Kaustubh Srikanth, Sreechand Tavva, Gautam John, and Laina Emmanuel.

Who Will Be Attending?

-
India has a growing group of people who are interested in data and we hope to have representatives from many different disciplines. People from Omidyar Network, Accountability Initiative, Janaagraha, IFMR, Tactical Tech, Centre for Internet and Society and India Council of Agriculture Research have all said they will come to share their issues with data. Also there has been interest vocalized by Sam Pitroda who has dedicated a great deal of time to working with data and will be invited to share his perspective in some way. People from Mumbai, Lucknow, and Delhi have all expressed interest in attending if this event happens to offer perspectives from other parts of the country.
-
We also will reach out to journalists like those at IndiaSpend.com, NYT and James Crabtree from Financial Times (who is also a trustee for MySociety, a British NGO dedicated to open government) who are interested in using data to tell stories. We wish to include people who work in business to see how they use data to make better informed decisions regarding scheme and programs. Organizations like Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, but also Mu Sigma (located in Bangalore) who work in data analysis and could share their experience working with data.

This event can bring together a diverse group of people with the singular goal of improving data and working with it to evaluate projects and create better programs. By gathering a great variety of experiences in one place we can learn from each other and improve all aspects of using data.
