Instability with Edimax 7711mac

Maintaining a network connection with the cheapo Edimax 711mac and this driver is a really interesting challenge.
Seemingly at random the connection will randomly drop. Most often this happens if I start a large file download or open a webpage. Other times it will simply just drop. I use NetworkManager and reinitialising the connection is a case of clicking on the SSID again in nm-applet and reassociating to the network.
It will frequently drop when playing games online.
The same device does not have the same issue on Windows with its own proprietary driver included on its CD so I have to put it down to this driver and not the device itself.
