Yes, looks MacOS-specific. Apple claims this was fixed in Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3 and 10.5 Update 8:

... but it does not appear to do so. Workaround: Finder Preferences.../Advanced; select "Show all filename extensions"

Switched back to Swing dialog for Save File... on MacOS. On MacOS, that's going through Quaqua, which isn't so bad.
