Support informal taxonomies

One thing that's very annoying right now is listing things that don't have a formal taxonomy. It'd be really useful to be able to just add an informal taxonomy, and then be able to add species (and subspecies) on the fly.

A basic implementation would add a fair bit of value. It would be really handy if it also could support editing, right in "Browse by taxonomy". - Add new species/subspecies - Rename - Edit metadata (range, alternate names, etc.) - Lump/split?

Interesting question: should Scythebill continue to require Order/Family, or can this be loosened up? I imagine that many people would rather just have a list of species, and would be happy to delay adding families/etc. for later (if ever).
