sightings with no locality info beyond "state/province" missing from ebird export

Original issue 70 created by adam_winer on 2013-01-13T19:09:18.000Z:

What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Enter a sighting for a locality specified only as a state/province 2. "Save for EBird" 3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I expect to see all of my sightings (the number reported at the end of the file you get when you do "Save as HTML". Instead, the sightings without a lower-level locality (below state/province) are missing.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? Scythebill 0.8.6 on Mac OS 10.7.4.

Please provide any additional information below.

Possibly EBird per se is not interested in such vague-locality sightings, but currently "save for EBird is the only export option for getting the whole database into a flat file, hence it's frustrating to have some records missing.

As a workaround, "Browse by location" can be used to reset the locality type from "state/province" to "none" (at least for user-defined provinces outside the USA -- I haven't wanted to mess with "factory-set" states or provinces). My suspicion is that the problem is caused by the the "/" character that appears in the locality name when only the state/province is specified, but that is omitted when a lower-level locality is also given. Presumably another workaround that would work would be to invent a locality called "no locality specified".

Would building an export-everything-to-a-flat-file meet your needs? This is a much needed feature, one I'm happy to build. Like you say, EBird can't import sightings without any localities, but the product absolutely needs a full export so you can take your own data and use anyway you want.

In revision 311, added a full "Export..." option to the file menu which will give you all content stored by Scythebill (whether or not it's EBird-acceptable).
