xnoise / Usage

General

xnoise and plugins

The xnoise package contains the xnoise player itself and the plugins, that add some extended functionalities to xnoise (like multimedia keys usage, album cover downloading, lyrics fetching, notifications ...).

Single plugins can be activated/deativated.

If you build the plugins from source, dependencies are checked and only plugins with available dependencies are build.

Add media to the library

You can import your media into the library via the add media dialog. The add media dialog can be found in the menu and allows adding single tracks or complete folders as well as streams. In xnoise's compact mode (which is the default mode for xnoise), the menu is located under the toolbutton on the upper right side of the main window (next to the volume button).

Find media in the library

To find a track in the library or xoise just enter a search term into the search entry of the media browser (upper left section of the main window). After hitting return the media browser will filter for the found media.

Play your music and videos

You can choose the music/videos to play by dragging them from the media browser (left hand side of the main window) onto the tracklist (right) or by double-clicking them in the media browser.

This can also be done while a video is playing or the lyrics are showing - xnoise will then switch to the tracklist as long as it takes to place your tracks into the list.

To start playing a track, just click on the play button or double-click the track you want to play in the tracklist. You can change the volume by scrolling on the tray icon or using the volume button on the upper right side of the main window. You can find your media by using the searh function of the media browser (upper left side of the main window). A track or an album can also be added to the tracklist and played by double-clicking on them in the media browser.

Hide and show xnoise window

Closing the xnoise main window will hide the window, only (unless otherwise chosen in the setings).

Playback will continue.

You can make the window visible again by clicking on the xnoise icon. The left-click on the icon toggles window visibility. By this, xnoise get's out of the way and gives you the space to do something else while playing your media.

Drag' n' drop

You can drag tracks from the media browser (left side of the main window) or from file managers (e.g. nautilus) to the xnoise tracklist (right side of the window). Dropping tracks onto the tracklist will enqueue them for playing. You can also drag onto the video screen or the lyrics view - that will show the tracklist for the time of dragging and allow you to put the track to the position of the queue you want. Autoscrolling will also help with this.

Drag'n'Drop is also possible from outside of xnoise, e.g. you can drag tracks you want to play from your file manager to xnoise.

Using ubuntu / unity HUD

For using the HUD with xnoise, please deactivate the compact mode in the settings dialog.

Using soundmenu integration in ubuntu

For using soundmenu integration in Ubuntu activate the soundmenu plugin in the plugin tab of the settings dialog.

Show album covers

If you want to show album covers for the currently played tracks, you have to activate a album image provider plugin. If the album cover was found online, it is shown on top of the window next to the title description area. If you want to take a closer look on the album cover, you can place your mousepointer over it - after 2 seconds the album cover is shown in bigger size in the video area.

Switch between views

Xnoise offers you different views for the right side of the window:

- Tracklist will show you the music/videos you enqueued

- Now Playing will show the played video or album covers respectively (if available. For automatic cover downloading use lastfm plugin)

- Lyrics will show text found for the currently played music, if available and if the plugins for this are active

You can switch between these view modes by clicking on the appropriate buttons on the button of the window or by using a keybinding explained on [KeyBindings].

Full screen video

As soon as xnoise starts to play a video, it will switch the view to video mode. From the video mode you can toggle fullscreen video by double-clicking into the video window or by selecting fullscreen from the context menu.

In fullscreen mode, everytime the mouse is moved, a control bar with various playback functions is shown for a few seconds. After that time the control bar and the mouse pointer is hidden again.

Key Bindings

The keybindings for xnoise are described here

Controlling xnoise via tray icon

- Left-click on the icon toggles window visibility.

- Right-click will show a menu. Via this menu you can control the playback and exit the application.
