shields.io badges (SVG) don't display in README (BB-12563)

I use shields.io to display badges in the README of my Open Source projects. Bitbucket seems to have major trouble with them:

• badges from shields.io are not displayed as images (ALT text is displayed, and sometimes the link URL) in the README in the overview and source file list.
• They do display - kind of - fine in the file detail, though the links don't work then and the text of the file cannot be selected.

Interestingly, the badges display fine on Github, please compare:

• https://bitbucket.org/bittner/django-organice
• https://github.com/bittner/django-organice

It looks like the display problems stem from the shields.io badges being SVG documents, not plain images (e.g. PNG). The W3C validator (click to be taken to the results) displays several violations, this could help you further.

Note that I've opened issue BCLOUD-395 on shield.io's issue tracker on Github. Just in case you feel there's nothing you can do about it.
