Impossible to render   in table cells

I am attempting to describe a textual diff algorithm. In order to do so, I need to render the following text:

inside table cells. Meaning, I need the value < followed by 4 spaces, followed by > to show up in a table cell. I have looked high and far but could not find a workaround for doing so.
