please handle newlines in code blocks (in markdown) correctly

Please reopen issue BCLOUD-7396

I should be able to put a code block into a README.md file, and have it displayed correctly in bitbucket. For example, bitbucket is unable to display this code block correctly when it's in the README.md in my repo:

$ echo "display this"
$ echo "on three"
$ echo "lines"

Bitbucket's behavior here is ridiculous (read the comments). Github of course handles this correctly.
