bitbucket hg clone over ssh significantly slower

The upgrade notes in the blog talk about better scaling after a recent upgrade:

"An unexpected side benefit to the new deployment is that we’re seeing upwards of a 10% performance increase for push and pull operations"

I didn't use bitbucket yesterday after the upgrade, but today I noticed that the hg clone operation is very significantly slower than before - so much slower that some automated build processes on my side actually time out on it. These are hg clones over ssh.
