Issue #4396 open

Add a Create Issue button to individual issue view page (BB-6062)

Aryeh Leib Taurog
created an issue

The title pretty much says it all. That is a very useful button. Users don't always find the "create issue" item in the "Issues" drop-down menu (there's nothing about that tab which indicates it is a drop-down menu).

    Hi Aryeh,

I am afraid we are going to leave the button off of the view page.

You would be surprised how many people found it confusing to have it on the view issue page.

You still have it when looking at the list of issues and in the issues drop-down.

Dylan, thanks for the explanation. Yes, I guess I would be surprised. I found it really useful.

I personally think the issues drop-down is a very poor UI. See the discussion of affordances in Donald Norman's Design of Everyday Things, chapter four, "Knowing What to Do." Tabs are for switching between distinct views or pages, not for making a selection from a menu of related items. The fact that none of the other tabs in the bitbucket interface are menus is another indication that this one also shouldn't be.

The "new" bitbucket doesn't have a drop-down on the issues tab (good!). So there's no way to create a new issue when viewing/editing an existing issue (bad!). This is really a very common use case, since issues often need to be split into parts. To do this from the issues list page is pretty inconvenient. I'm re-opening this issue.

    Hi Aryeh,

We haven't quite finished with our work on the Issue Tracker. Those toolbar buttons will absolutely be changed to tabs, and the create button will get some love too. Just hang in there, more changes are coming soon.

I was just about to submit a similar enhancement request. There's no way to vote issues but I thought I'd throw in a comment as I would also find this feature incredibly useful.
