Source downloads in .zip or .tar.gz seem to be incompatible with Unix unzip or tar

Issue #6611 invalid

If I attempt to download (or end it in .zip)

I get this on my FreeBSD 9 systems:

$ gzip -d *.gz gzip: 1265ebd0144a.tar.gz: not in gzip format $ tar xvf default.tar.gz tar: Unrecognized archive format tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors.

Same problem with .zip - unzip won't work with it.

However, on a windows machine, a download of a .zip works, and opens up with the windows explorer.

Am I just not understanding something, or is the packager making broken files?

    Are you sure you are unzipping the right file there? The tip of your default branch appears to be a550f1ef358c, while the file you are attempting to gunzip is 1265ebd0144a.tar.gz

    I tried downloading your archive and had no problems (g)unzipping. Can you paste the entire shell session in which you wget the file and attempt to unzip it? I'd like to be sure that you are getting the same file that I got.

    Same thing as before, can you paste your wget/curl command including all shell output, plus an md5 sum of the downloaded file? Something like this:

    09:28 /tmp $ wget
    --2015-09-30 09:29:07--
    Connecting to||:443... connected.
    HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
    Length: unspecified [application/x-tar-gz]
    Saving to: 'default.tar.gz'
    default.tar.gz          [ <=>                  ]  18.12K  --.-KB/s   in 0s
    2015-09-30 09:29:07 (239 MB/s) - 'default.tar.gz' saved [18558]
    09:29 /tmp $ md5 default.tar.gz
    MD5 (default.tar.gz) = bac44720385abd35e0158d2b1ebcde9d
