Enabled gzip/deflate compression for hosted pages (BB-8840)

Issue #7663 open
Duo Holo File Manager w/ Root
created an issue

Hosted pages are served without gzip/deflate turned on. It makes it really hard to have the above the fold content fit into the first 14kb for a fast load on 3g. Please add gzip/deflate at least as an option.

Yep, this looks like a fuckup on our part. gzip compression appears to not be enabled for plain http, which of course if undesirable.

Compression works fine over https, but that's not helpful for hosted pages. I've raised an internal issue.

This bug is still an issue:

    Requested: Accept:/ Accept-Encoding:gzip, deflate, sdch Accept-Language:en-US,en;q=0.8,fr;q=0.6 Cache-Control:max-age=0 Connection:keep-alive

    Response: Accept-Ranges:bytes Cache-Control:max-age=900 Connection:Keep-Alive Content-Language:en Content-Length:2068003 Content-Type:text/xml Date:Wed, 15 Jun 2016 13:51:19 GMT

The server does not respond with a compressed stream of data. Is that because you need more resources on the server side to enable compression for every site?
