The Gitflow workflow is the team standard for branching: https://www.atlassian.com/git/tutorials/comparing-workflows#gitflow-workflow . All repositories should be managed using this workflow.
When committing a code change, always reference a JIRA issue or TrackIt ticket (or both) to record why the code change was made.
The Git ignore file should be commited to the repository to prevent IDE and other files being committed and overwriting other developers' environments - eg. .project, .settings, .git, etc.
