Why is distribute modifying my sys.path despite telling to install elsewhere by using the --root option?

{{{ sridharr@whymac:/tmp/d2/distribute-0.6 > ../e/bin/python setup.py install --root=./installdir > log.txt 2>&1 sridharr@whymac:/tmp/d2/distribute-0.6 > cd ../e/ sridharr@whymac:/tmp/d2/e > hg st ! lib/python2.6/site-packages/setuptools-0.6c9-py2.6.egg ? .Python ? lib/python2.6/site-packages/setuptools-0.6c9-py2.6.egg.OLD.1250622125.82 ? lib/python2.6/site-packages/setuptools-0.6c9-py2.6.egg/EGG-INFO/PKG-INFO sridharr@whymac:/tmp/d2/e > }}}

I found this bug via PyPM backend logs .. about half of the packages in PyPI failed to build due to this (cannot import setuptools at all .. after building distribute). Let me know if you need more information. I am attaching the output of setup.py
