Clicking on a username in the Pivot by Users report and the Timesheet report takes me to an empty page at https://timereports.github.io/timereports.html.

Could you please provide screen shot of the case when the link opens the empty page?

Normally it's correct url for add-on to be opend inside JIRA iframe, so the problem rather is that it's opened at browser main window, instead of iframe. May be you have clicked it with Ctrl?

Righ-click and Open in New Tab. The same as I used to do in the old report; keep the dashboard where it is and have a more detailed look at the log for an individual user. Seems like a perfectly reasonable use case. If I left-click on a user it just reloads the report in the gadget, but with the users in a new random order.

I agree, but isn't not possible to do it. It depends on issue#743, though, it may be possible eventually.
