The X Factor is an American television music competition to find new singing talent; the winner of which receives a recording contract with Syco/Sony Music. The third season premiered on Fox on September 11, 2013.[1] The original show is in the United Kingdom. Simon Cowell and Demi Lovato returned as judges for their respective third and second season. Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio joined Cowell and Lovato on the panel as replacements for former judges, Britney Spears and L.A. Reid. The show is hosted by America's Best Dance Crew host Mario Lopez.

Producer auditions began on March 6, 2013, in Los Angeles, and ended on May 4, 2013, in Denver. The judges auditions, which are televised, began on May 21, 2013, in Charleston, and ended on July 12, 2013, in Los Angeles. New for this season is the removal of the bootcamp and judges' houses rounds of the competition which have been replaced with a new middle section, more reminiscent of the live shows.

On October 22, 2012, it was announced that The X Factor would be returning for a third season.[2] with Simon Cowell confirmed to be returning.[3] On December 14, L.A. Reid announced he would not return to the show for its third season, as he wished to refocus his work on his record company, Epic Records.[4] Britney Spears stated her intentions on returning to the show for its third season,[5] but it was confirmed on January 11, 2013, that she would not be returning, in order to focus on her music career.[6]

Following the conclusion of season two, Demi Lovato questioned whether she would return for another season, or instead focus on her own career as a performer, stating, "I have no idea what’s gonna happen next season, and I don't think anybody does."[7] However, on March 28, 2013, it was confirmed that Lovato will return. On April 22, it was confirmed by Fox that Mario Lopez would be returning to host season three, but Khloé Kardashian was not asked to return as co-host for a second season.[8] Cowell confirmed via his Twitter account that the full judging panel will be announced on May 20, 2013, with auditions beginning the next day.[9] On May 20, 2013, the day before auditions began, Fox officially confirmed that former Destiny's Child member and The X Factor UK judge Kelly Rowland, and Mexican singer and former La Voz... México judge Paulina Rubio had been hired to replace Spears and Reid.[10]

For this season of The X Factor, Cowell confirmed that the boot camp and judges' houses sections of the competition, which traditionally followed the audition rounds, had been dropped and replaced with a brand new stage called "The Four-Chair challenge". Speaking on the change, he said "It [boot camp and Judges' houses] was the one element of the show I wasn't happy with, and it looked too similar to what everybody else is doing." He went on to describe the new "middle section" as "really dramatic, very tough on us and the contestants, and very high pressure", and compared the new round as similar to the live shows.[13]

This season, the categories will not follow the age-based format from season two but rather the format from season one: Boys, Girls, Over 25s and Groups. Rowland will mentor Over 25s, Lovato the Girls, Rubio the Boys, and for the second season in a row, Simon Cowell will mentor the Groups.[14]

The Four-chair challenge episodes were broadcast on 2 two-hour Wednesdays and 2 one-hour Thursdays shows on October 2,3, 9 and 10.

Last week’s results show sent two acts – four ladies – home. Tonight, the finalists are on fire and the competition is heating up as they take on British Invasion week! The remaining eight acts perform to avoid being the two sent home on Thursday.

Here’s a synopsis of X Factor USA:

“In this American version of the hit U.K. show, Simon Cowell and his fellow judges search for a singer who has the “X” factor. Since its debut in 2004, “The X Factor” has remained the U.K.’s No. 1 program for the last seven years, peaking with an audience of 21 million for its 2010 finale. The format swiftly broke similar records around the world, where local versions have consistently rated No. 1. The series has received numerous honors worldwide, and more than 100 million records have been sold by artists launched through the series, including over 90 No. 1 singles and albums and 150 Top 10 records.

In a departure from other singing competition series, the first time contestants audition for The X Factor judges; Simon Cowell, Antonio “L.A.” Reid, Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, they will do so in front of an audience of thousands – raising the stakes and increasing the pressure to impress not only the judges, but also a potential legion of fans. This will be the ultimate test to prove they have the vocal ability, charisma and stage presence it takes to win an unprecedented $5 million recording contract with Syco/Sony Music. This year they will be judged by Simon Cowell, “L.A.” Reid, Britney Spears and Demi Lovato.”
